In Loving Memory of Shori Lal Katyal

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Shori Lal Katyal, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on February 12, 2025. He peacefully passed at North York General Hospital with his family by his side.

Shori was born in India on July 5, 1936.   He grew up in a large loving family of 5 brothers and 2 sisters.  He completed his Bachelor of Art at the University of Punjab, India in Pure and Applied Mathematics, and went on to pursue his Masters of Arts in Political Science also at the University of Punjab.  He pursued his education further at the University of London, England receiving a Certificate of Education in 1967.  This was followed by immigration to Canada, where he obtained a Masters in Education at the University of Ottawa.

He subsequently spent 39 years as a teacher and educator in Toronto, shaping the lives of countless students.  His commitment to education extended to mentoring young teachers, leaving a lasting impact on the profession he cherished, and he retired from full time teaching in 1999.

Shori had a great interest in serving his community, and volunteered with numerous organizations and committees over the years.  He was espcially proud of being the President of the Hindu Federation of Canada from 1986-89, and was the vice President of the National Association of Canadians of Origin in India (NACOI) from 1983-85.   He received The Government of Ontario Community Volunteer Services Award in 1995.  He was a devotee of the Vishnu Mandir since its inception, and was acitvely involved in weekly worship and with the summer camps for kids.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kamlesh, and their children Monica (Neel), Anil (Sabrina), and Sonia.  He will be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren Avinash, Maya, Jayin, Nikhil, Hans, Ruben, and Aakaash.   Shori's memory will live on through his family, whose lives have been enriched by his unwavering love and support.

A special thank you to all the physicians, nurses, and medical staff who made it possible for him to spend his last year at home in comfort and peace.  He had a special place in his heart for his personal PSW'S who cared for him with great sincerity, love, and affection.
