Daddy’s Journey

Daddy began life in humble beginnings in Punjab, India — the third of eight siblings, and the only one to attend university, and leave India, despite objections from his parents. From early on, he was a visionary, determined to create a better life. He studied tirelessly by kerosene lamp, cycling wearing just chappals to his colleges. His father borrowed money for his education and lodgings. After meeting Mum, he fulfilled his dream of moving abroad — first to Kenya, then to England, always seeking new opportunities for his young family.

In England, both Mum and Dad worked tirelessly — night shifts, lodgers, and Dad attending evening accounting classes — always striving to improve. His big break came when he joined the Copper Mines in Zambia as an accountant. Through hard work and loyalty, he rose to become Chief Financial Officer of ZCCM — a remarkable achievement for a boy from a small Indian village. Zambia became our home for 21 wonderful years.

Dad helped many relatives settle there and earned the affectionate title “Ramji” for his kindness and generosity. A true community leader, he chaired countless clubs, organized large cultural events, and still found time for his passion — gardening. His magical green thumb produced every fruit and flower imaginable, and his rose cuttings still bloom in Lusaka’s Munda Wanga Gardens.

He gave us an incredible life, including sending us both to boarding school in England. Later, in Canada, Daddy reinvented himself yet again — running a high-end kitchen store on Yonge Street, where his charm and warmth made him unforgettable. Even in retirement, he stayed active, helping with our businesses and supporting his community and family with endless generosity.

Daddy, we are so deeply proud of you — of all that you achieved, and of the courage, wisdom, and strength you passed on to us. You showed us the world and showered us with such a vibrant, colourful life. You lifted us up with your love, encouraged us to dream bigger, to do more, and to be more. You taught us to walk through life with hard work, humility, gratitude, kindness and acceptance toward everyone we meet. Your spirit, your lessons, and your love will live within us always.

We love you forever.

Your loving daughters,

Suman and Nidhi
