Obituary of Roopnarine Lalbeharry

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Roopnarine Lalbeharry of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Our beloved father passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, at the age of 85.

Roop was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was cherished by all who knew him for his welcoming smile, generous spirit, and trademark dry sense of humor. Above all, he was known for his unwavering devotion to family.

Roop is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Leela; his three children, Nalini (Ron), Sharda (Chris), and Dev (Prita); and his five adoring grandchildren, Priya, Mira, Sacha, Vedan, and Arya. Roop will be deeply missed by his siblings, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, and extended family.

Born in Port Mourant, Guyana, Roop was the eldest son of the late Elick and Sutya Lalbeharry and siblings to his sisters Deoratie (predeceased), Toorie, and Sattie (predeceased), and brother, Bato. Roop carried his love of learning throughout his life, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guyana in 1968 and a Master of Science degree from Florida State University in 1970. He began his career lecturing at the University of Guyana and the Caribbean Meteorological Institute in Barbados. Roop later emigrated to Canada, where he enjoyed a distinguished career as a meteorologist for Atmospheric Environment Canada. His determination and resilience in building a better life for his family will forever remain an inspiration.

Roop loved to travel and did so extensively with his wife, Leela. Yet, it was the precious moments spent with his family and friends that he cherished above all else, finding true contentment in their company.
