The Baichan family is saddened to announce the passing of their beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather Jairam Baichan. He passed in the comfort of his own home on September 6, 2020, after a long and fulfilling 92 years.
Jairam Baichan was born on October 12, 1927, in Skeldon, Berbice, Guyana, to Baichan and Lilawatti Latchman. He was the fifth of six kids - Duliah, Mantoon, Balram, Parbati, Jairam, and Elsie. He was a hard-working, mischievous, and brave child. Knowledge was very important to Jairam, and he full-filled his education while helping his siblings and working. His early professions included farming, cane cutting and payroll clerk.
He married Poonmatti Mohabir on April 17, 1949 and was a devoted husband to her for 61 years. Jairam and Poonmatti were blessed over the years with four sons – Heymant, Mahen, Prakash, and Mukesh. The family moved around over the years, but the number 70 village Berbice was always their home.
Jairam continued his education all of his life. He studied for the Associate of Charter Institute of Secretary and Administration. This accreditation awarded him a promotion to Auditor, and eventually became the Regional Coop Officer of Berbice, West Demerara, and Essequibo.
Jairam enjoyed travelling for his job. In 1965, he attended a joint development seminar in Denmark, where he represented Guyana among 18 other countries. He also studied in Nova Scotia and helped open the first Credit Union in Guyana. Some of the other countries he travelled for work included Germany and Columbia.
On April 1, 1979, Jairam immigrated to Canada. In Canada, Jairam earned his professional administration diploma and worked as an accountant and credit manager. He retired in 1992.
In Canada, his family continued to grow. He gained four daughters-in-law: Gaiatri, Joan, Joanie, and Lorna. His grandchildren: Vijai, Nadia, Ravi, Sharda, Dave, Vickram, Priya, and Anniesa. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Lila, Arjun, Arianna, Layla, and Hanna.
He will always be remembered as a leader who worked extremely hard and cherished his time with his family. His knowledge, guidance, and accomplishments in life leave a comforting presence in our lives. He will be greatly missed.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, a small viewing and service followed by cremation were held on September 9, 2020.
