Kowsilla “Baba” Chiekrie (nee Sain) lost her battle with Leukemia and peacefully passed away on Tuesday January 31 st at Mackenzie Health just shy of her 65 th birthday.

Baba was born at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, Guyana on Feb 3, 1958, to Choloram and Radjwantie Sain (deceased). She moved with her family as a child to Campbellville, Georgetown. She attended St. Joseph’s High School followed by the Modern Business Computer Secretarial school in Georgetown. As well she worked in her family’s general store.


Baba married Jai in 1976 in Guyana and soon relocated to Trinidad with her family in 1978, eventually returning to Guyana in 1986. Baba and her family emigrated to Canada in February 1994 where they lived until her passing in January 2023. Most of her career she worked as an administrator at a Law Office in Toronto from 1994 to 2020.


Baba and her husband, Jai, were blessed with four daughters Bhanuja Hardeo (Ravi), Bhamini Chiekrie, Geetanjali Chiekrie (deceased) and Raksha Ponnudurai (Harrison).
She is also survived by her three grandchildren Sanjay, Maya and Zayne. In addition, Baba will be sadly missed by her family and friends including her siblings: Baldeo (Iris), Bunny (Alice), Rita, Savitri, Pammy (Nazim), Nandanine (Doc) and Naresh (Mala).
