Lajya Devi, our beji, was born in Muggowal, India in 1930 (exact date is unknown). She was our leader. She lost her husband when she was 32 years old. Despite her loss, she carried her family forward as a single mother and raised seven incredible children. She then led their migration from India to the UK and Canada, where she helped raise her grandchildren and took great joy in her great-grandchildren. Beji taught us the importance of family, the importance of sticking together, showing each other love, and knowing that family matters most. And her family extended beyond the household. Family included friends and distant relatives who came to our home asking for Beji. They would seek her advice and guidance and Beji thoroughly enjoyed the company of every person who entered our home. In her final days, Beji often spoke of her time in India and of her husband. Our beloved beji passed away on December 6th, 2018 and her husband on December 4th, 56 years ago. She is now with her husband and will continue to live in the hearts of the countless people she has touched. She leaves behind a legacy of boundless love and selfless devotion to others.
