Pamela was my bench-mate and one of my best friends during the four years we were enrolled at Chandisingh high school. We always hung around together with other friends from our class during recess, played rounders on the CHS grounds, and shared bits of chit-chat before classes started for the morning and afternoon sessions.
Pamela always styled her long hair in a ponytail and hated wearing the required hat that was part of our school outfit. She would quickly put the hat on only when there was a Prefect nearby, and promptly remove it after they had passed by.
We were both on the quiet side when it came to speaking up in class, and we both tried to become invisible during Latin and French classes so our teachers would not call on us to translate anything. It didn’t always work too well.
As would often happen, we did not stay in touch after high school. Because of distance, the only option back then in Guyana was to write letters since not many households had phones. I did many searches on the internet in recent years in hopes of locating some of my high-school friends, but was unsuccessful in locating Pam. I became re-acquainted with one best friend through a fortunate coincidence, and she was the one who put me in touch with Pamela. Pam and I have kept in touch for the past few years, and I was looking forward to sometime being able to get together in person.
I will always remember her radiant smile and quiet demeanor.
