Obituary of Chellathurai Kandasamy

Capt. Chellathurai Kandasamy of North York, Ontario, Canada and formerly of Colombo, Sri Lanka, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2019 surrounded by his family at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto. Mr. Kandasamy was born on April 3rd, 1932 in Thellipallai, Jaffna to Chellathurai and Annaluxumi. He completed his elementary, primary and secondary school education at Mahajana College, Thellipallai. His older sisters, educators in local schools, had significant influence on his education. On completion of his senior school education, he was selected to follow Marine Cadet Officer program and apprenticeship with Srilankan Fisheries Corporation. On successful completion of his apprenticeship in 1957, he was nominated as one of three cadets for training as Marine Captain at Liverpool Nautical College, England. On completion of his training, he was appointed as a Marine Captain in the Srilankan Fisheries Corporation in 1960. He continued to work in the Fisheries Corporation until 1977 when he decided to explore opportunities outside Sri Lanka. From 1978 to 1987, he worked as Fisheries Consultant, Port Manager and Operations Manager in Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. In 1987, he migrated to Montreal, Canada with his family and continued to work part time until his retirement in 2003. Upon his retirement, he moved to North York and lived there until his passing away. He was preceded in death by his parents Chellathurai and Annaluxumi and sisters Sawpackiawathy (late Rajaratnam), Maheswari (late Thurairaja) and brother Rajaratnam (late Irene). He is survived by his wife Kamalawathie, son Ramesha, daughter Ramani (Sriv) and grandson Krishna. In addition, he is also survived by his sister Mangalapoopathy (late Kathirkamanathan), many nieces and nephews.
