Pooran ‘Rupert’ Ramlakhan, caring husband to Chandra Sandra, beloved father to daughter
Sarita and son Vinod, celebrated 75 years with a zest for life, a positive mindset and sense of
adventure. Pooran’s tenacious spirit whisked him from his birthplace Trinidad, to Canada where
he and Chandra worked diligently to set up a life for themselves and their children. Pooran was
diagnosed in January 2024 with Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer which may
have curbed his ability for adventure, but not his infallible spirit. Pooran’s unwavering belief in
karma saw him through his treatments with good spirits, and he would always flash his
signature 2 thumbs up ‘feeling great’, until his peaceful passing.
Pooran was 11 of 15 Children to Ramlakhan and Phoolasarie Suckrit (nee Debideen), cherished
brother to Tita, Krishna, Elaine, Kamla, Jaiharry, Satnarine, Rajendra, Tensing, Marilyn and
Suzie and pre-deceased to big brothers Harry, Gunpat, Jaisiree and big sister Linda who gave
him his middle name Rupert.
Pooran was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, whether together or individually, he
enjoyed his time with them - be it playing cards, going on long drives, ‘limin’ on the beach, or
chatting about life and love. He was admired for his ability to maintain relationships with
relatives, friends and coworkers alike, no matter how much time had elapsed. He attracted
people with his infectious smile, outgoing personality and had a knack for making connections
no matter the language barrier, background or diversity. Pooran loved to play sports and many
know about his love for Cricket. His childhood passion for Geography manifested itself later in
life through many treks across the globe. Almost everyone was touched by his love of star
gazing, plane spotting, and all things wildlife, as he shared these passions unabashedly.
While we mourn the loss of his shining light, his infectious spirit and his eye-roll worthy (yet
hilarious) ‘Dad’ jokes, we celebrate those moments, and we celebrate a life well lived with those
who loved living it with him.
We very much appreciate flowers as gestures of sympathy, however, as a way to honour
Pooran, and a tribute to the loving kindness he received, we humbly request you donate to Hill
House Hospice. Their hands-on individual care extended to not only Pooran but to his family
and friends, we were all treated with dignity, respect and empathy at a difficult time. They made
this journey’s end, a transition of peace, love and comfort, which has earned our eternal
gratitude.
