It’s been almost 15 years since I last shed a tear, but on September 5th, as I sat by your bedside, it was nearly impossible to hold them back. I miss you deeply and think back to our younger days when you took me on so many fishing adventures. From you, I learned the importance of being a good person and that family is everything.
I wish we could have done more to make you comfortable. You fought with such strength until the very end, and that will always stay with me. You were a strong man, and now it’s our turn to be strong for you. Look down from above and rest in peace—you deserve happiness and solace after all you endured.
I promise to take care of our family and keep the traditions alive. Ba Noi is in good hands and will never be alone. Your thoughts and memories will be cherished forever. Dear family, relatives, friends, and guests from near and far, including those joining us via Zoom.
I wish you all great health, peace, and prosperity. On behalf of our family, I sincerely thank each of you who have travelled and taken the time to be with us today.
We are gathered here not to grieve, but to celebrate the remarkable life of Thanh Tam Do, my grandfather. He led a fulfilling life, working diligently and giving his all. As a military man, he was resourceful, meticulous, and had a strong sense of discipline. His way or the highway, as the saying goes.
Above all, he loved his Wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren unconditionally. His home was not just a place to live, but a true hub of support and care. Whether you needed paint, lightbulbs, medicine, or food, Grandpa was there with whatever you needed. His love language is taking care of his family in every way possible, no matter the size of the need.
When Grandpa first arrived in Canada, our family consisted of just eight people. Now, we have grown to over thirty. Throughout the years, he was proud to build a loving and harmonious extended family. He taught us the true meaning of family. Sure, we have our disagreements, but let us set those aside today and remember why we are here.
In times of loss, we learn not to live without our loved ones, but to live with the love they left behind. With this spirit, I urge everyone to cherish each other and work together to build a better world. Life brings tears, smiles, and memories. While tears will dry and smiles may fade, memories last forever. Today is a day we will remember and cherish always.
Missing you comes in waves, and tonight I’m drowning. I hope you know how much those little moments we shared meant to me and to all of us.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the doctors and healthcare professionals who made sure he was comfortable, extended family who travelled from abroad, friends attending, and the Lotus Funeral Company for their guidance and support throughout today's service. To our guests, please accept our apologies if we fell short in any way during this difficult time. Your understanding means a great deal to us.
May you rest in paradise with eternal peace and love. Ba Noi is in good hands and we all promise to take care of her exactly as you would. You will forever be cherished in our memories and heart. We all miss and love you so much.

Thank you for being a wonderful grandfather to all the cousins and me, and the anchor of our family.
For the past 19 years, your home has been the place of so many of my fondest family memories. I remember how you used to walk my sisters and me back and forth from school while we were growing up. When I played the keyboard in grade school, you were always there after school in your camo hat, ready to help me bring it back home. When I would hurt myself playing outside or in the basement with the cousins, I knew I could count on you to take care of me with your basket of bandages and medicines. I will always remember how much you loved playing the lotto and how your face would light up when you received lotto tickets and money as Christmas gifts. Holidays were especially memorable with you handing out lì xì every Christmas, and every New Year’s Eve, you always went around and made sure everyone had champagne before the countdown.
Your love and presence have made a lasting impact on me. I will forever cherish the memories of you being a strong, capable, and caring grandfather. Rest in peace, Ông Ngoại. We miss you deeply and promise to take good care of Bà Ngoại.

Hi Ông Ngoại,
Thank you for being the greatest grandpa I could ask for. You always dropped me off and picked me up at the bus stop, even during the winter time, to make sure I made it safe and sound. Your home was the place of so many of my core memories. Sleepovers at your house with the cousins, you letting us stay over and hog the TV, watching cartoons until we went home, letting us be loud playing pretend in the basement, get togethers every Friday. I’ll always remember the trips we went on, once in a while, to McDonald’s to use your coupons and you buying us happy meals. I remember playing in the PlayPlace and trying to get your attention from the top but, of course, no one could hear over the noise. When we were younger, we’d always have little snacks you gave us. One in particular was rock sugar. Thinking about that always makes me laugh since you gave two young kids sugar and it made us super hyper. The other was the amazing coffee you make with bread to dip into it. Just sitting there talking and eating bread with coffee are some of my fondest memories with you.
I’ll miss you so much, Ông Ngoại. You always knew how to take care of us well and showed how much you loved us. You were the rock of our family and the greatest role model for us grandkids. If I could, in another life, I would choose you to be my grandpa again, and in every life after that. I hope you’re happy and healthy as ever where you are. Rest in paradise, Ông Ngoại. We’ll take great care of Bà Ngoại.

Thank you for being the rock of our family. Not only were you there to provide us with support, strength, and love, but you were able to turn a house into a home. It was always “Let’s go to Ông Ngoại’s house,” for any celebration such as Christmas, New Years, or even if you won the lottery. It will forever be a place to eat good food, be around family, and laugh until we cried.
I will always remember the sleepovers we had at your house when we were kids and how shy we were to ask you to let us go to the park because we were scared you would say ‘no’. I will cherish how you wrote my name as ‘July’ instead of ‘Julie’ on the li xi you gave out every Christmas. I will never forget the big smile you had on your face and how excited you would get to show off the cucumbers you grew in your garden. I was always excited to hear the news from my mom saying “Ông Ngoại won the lottery, we are going over to eat thịt heo quay.” These memories will always warm my heart, and I am so glad I got to share these moments with you.
You truly showed what family means and I am forever grateful. We all miss you dearly. Rest in paradise Ông Ngoại and please do not worry about Bà Ngoại, we will take care of her.

Lý ra nên để trong lòng nhưng con nghĩ nên cần phái viết ra để các con của con đọc và luôn nhớ là mình có một người Ông Ngoại "hay giống vậy" theo kiểu nói của Jacqueline.
Vài điều nhỏ nhỏ muốn share:
Ba là người chỉnh chu ngăn nắp sãch sẽ, tủ quần áo của Ba thẳng thớm y như trong tiệm.
Mùa đông sân nhà Ba luôn sạch tuyết trước hơn nhà hàng xóm, mùa hè thì sớm sớm đã gieo cải, mấy con luôn có cải tươi ngon ăn trước, rau trồng nhiều thì cắt bỏ bịch rồi phone hết mấy đứa tới lấy, có khi có đứa không rãnh thì lái xe đem đến tận nhà.
Mua vé số trúng thì phone thông báo hết trơn, lãnh tiền xong thì đi mua đồ ăn đãi hết các con cháu.
Mấy chị em gái tối thứ sáu nào cũng tới thăm Ba mẹ nói chuyện tào lao, mà lúc nào Ba cũng có cà phê pha cho mỗi đứa đem đến tận bàn, Ba biết đứa nào uống vị ra sao, còn pha thêm ly extra cho con 7 mang về để nó không phải đi mua mắc công.
Trên giường bịnh Ba có kể cho con nghe hồi nhỏ cực khổ như thế nào, wow, sao mà Ba có thể chống chọi qua được bao nhiêu chuyện như vậy, con luôn miệng nói woah Ba hay quá.
Giờ thì Ba không cần phải cực, không còn mệt nữa, chuyện lớn nhỏ gì cũng buông.

I’ll keep this short, just how you like it.
I can still see you at my convocation – white pinstripe shirt, pen in the pocket, silver watch, camo hat, and perfectly pressed wool pants. As always, you were impeccably dressed and came an hour early to check the gas and make sure everything was set. This wasn’t just attention to detail, it was a testament to your character. You didn’t just show up, you made things right.
But that day, what stood out wasn’t your style or care – it was your warm smile. You seemed almost giddy, beaming with pride on the way there and back (for folks reading, he was never giddy!) And as proud as you were of me, I want you to know how proud I am of you. For every sacrifice you made so our family could have a better future. For the kindness you shared with family, friends, and neighbours. For the values you personified and instilled in us: family, hard work, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Though you leave us now, know we are always with you and will keep you forever in our hearts. Go in peace and with pride knowing we are stronger, better, and more together than ever because of you.
We’ll take great care of Ba Ngoai.

I miss you so much already. My heart is aching everyday. I know you are gone from this world, but I will never forget the memories we've created. May you rest in peace. Don't worry about us or grandma, we will take good care of her like you always have.
For anyone reading this, my grandfather was the perfect example of what it means to be a family man. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and the great-grandfather to my children.
He was a selfless man who went through his life helping others. He put everyone first. He was a true gentleman that no one can match up to.
He taught me so many lessons in life. He always put his family first and that is something I will never forget.
I am proud and also very lucky to have experienced life as his second eldest granddaughter.
He will be greatly missed.
