Nityanand (Nitya) Varma (1937-2025)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nityanand (Nitya) Varma, a devoted community leader, loving family man, and distinguished professional. Nitya passed away on January 2nd, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness, compassion, and generosity.
Born in Muzaffarpur India, Nitya earned his Master's degrees in Civil Engineering and Management Science from the University of Waterloo. He had a distinguished career spanning over 45 years, retiring as Director of Corporate Planning and Analysis from Bell Canada in 1996. He later served as President and CEO of ANASA Group Inc.
Nitya's tireless dedication to serving others was recognized with numerous awards, including the University of Waterloo's Engineering Alumni Lifetime Achievement Medal for Volunteerism, the City of Ottawa's Interfaith Ottawa Award, and the United Way Centraide Ottawa's Community Builder Award.
He served on the Board of Directors of several organizations, including the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the United Way Centraide Ottawa, and the Indo-Canadian Community Centre. His leadership and vision helped shape the direction of these organizations, leaving a lasting legacy.
Nitya is survived by his loving wife, Shashi, and their three children Amrita (Raju), Anjali (Charbel) and Amar (Anna) and his grandchildren Nikesh, Navin, Aditya, Sagar, Mia, Indira and Rayan. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Ottawa a week later at the Pinecrest Remembrance Services at 2500 Baseline Road on January 14 at 1pm to 3pm.
