Eulogy at my Father's funeral mass
Alan Carmelito Del Puerto was a man of virtue.
Ever since God found him through the Church and Opus Dei, he devoted his life to what he called the Beautiful Way "El Camino Hermosa" offering all he did to God, big and small, doing the ordinary extraordinarily.
He sacrificed and he served - he was truly a selfless man. He gave up a budding career as a future head of operations for Metrobank in southeast Asia to give his children a better future here in Canada.
And so at the age of 36, with 4 boys and one more on the way, he and my mom Maria arrived in Canada with basically nothing.
Sacrifice.
He picked up any job he could find, shoveling snow, then as a typist and all of a sudden found himself working as a business transformation consultant in places like beautiful Switzerland and on Wall Street New York New York; which, incidentally resulted in many retellings of how he survived the 9/11 tragedy. You've probably heard that story from him many, many times
He was a very intelligent and creative man, his interest in strategy found an outlet in his love for the game of chess. He tried teaching me but every time we played he'd say "it's already over" 5 moves into the game.
He was always thinking of the bigger picture, always thinking outside of the box, especially during family boggle nights where his "creative" words would require the need for a dictionary to come out often as we would have to challenge him, by the way, half the time the words weren't valid.
Perseverance.
He also persevered, when things got tough, when he failed, he would always pick himself back up. As his dear friend, Raymond, really his brother, would say, he was a Cinderella man.
He was always cheerful at family gatherings, always the court jester, trying desperately to make his grandchildren laugh - a truly happy-go-lucky kind of guy. And although not a virtue, at least technically, he had this knack of sounding exactly like John and Paul when he picked up the guitar and sang songs from his favourite band, the Beatles, he'd lose his Filipino accent just like that, it was really weird - we're going to miss that greatly.
And if he had a vice it would have to be his pride.
He was deeply proud of his family!
Of his 7 grandchildren, one of which is on the way (a girl! Yay! And yes he was even proud of her!)
And of his 7 children, our Kuya God rest his soul, Alan Carmelito Jr, I'm sure he's told you by now directly, of Karl, Jamie, myself, Michael, Maryanne and Thomas;
And of course of my mom, his beautiful and loving wife
He was extremely proud.
And we of you Pa.
And at times, he may not have been the best communicator to his family, but that didn't matter, because, most of all, he taught us all these virtues and many others with his example, with the way he lived his Beautiful Life.

Alan Carmelito del Puerto,
Thank you so much for being such a kind and loving Lolo to me and my brothers. We will all miss you very much. Thank you for all the good times we had together and thank you for always buying Timbits for us even though we never asked for them. Thank you for taking us cherry picking and taking us to the park. Thank you for buying ice cream and singing songs for us on your guitar. Thank you for teaching us new things and telling us cool stories about your childhood. Thank you for rolling down the windows in the car and calling it Lolo’s breeze. Thank you for always playing with Sammy and making him laugh. Thank you for bringing us food when Mom was sick and thank you for making us laugh too. Thank you for hugging us and telling us that you love us. Lastly, thank you so much for everything and we’ll never forget all the fun times we had with you. You were really the best Lolo we could ever ask for. We love you so very much and will forever miss you.
Farewell Lolo, and rest in peace
Your loving grandkids,
Samuel, Dominic, and Julia

A Tribute to My Dear Friend Alan del Puerto.
Alan and I have been friends from the time he landed in Mississauga, On., from the Philippines in the eighties. He not only was a good friend but also a mentor to me which he never knew, I say mentor, because he never ceased to amaze me with courage, perseverance , humility and simplicity to venture into new challenges with no idea what the outcome would be.
Having just landed in Canada he started looking for a job, and landed one at de Havilland Boeing corp. as a typist and soon to join the Boing Quality Circle team.
Alan was to me 'The Cinderella Man', cause no matter how many he fell, he has always been able to survive this jungle and keep going, bringing up seven children with his wife Mari-Vic at his side.
When Alan was first admitted to Hospital, I went a few days latter to visit him he was lying in bed with his eyes barely open. Thomas his youngest son at his bedside said "Pa Tito Ray is here to see you' Alan with the little energy he had opened his eyes, and said hi Ray, nice to see you, how are you feeling? Wow! What a Guy! Always thinking of the other. That was Alan.
Alan was a very passionate man, when given or undertook a job he always did it with all his energy, and support from his wife. When asked how he managed to do a job that quick he would always say it was Mari-Vic and her skills on the computer, even in the last few years when his was not that well.
The reason I remember Alan's children's and grandchildren's names is because Alan talked about them a lot, he loved them and thought the world of them, especially Samuel.
As much as Alan looked liked a macho man, he had a soft heart, he cried towards the end because he didn't have the energy to help out as much as he could. He fought until the very last, a reminder to us all not to give in to laziness or otherwise and to get up at every fall.
Rest in Heavenly Peace Alan.
Ray Pereira

Adios Kuya Alan. Failed with regret to thank you enough before God took you back. Muchas gracias Señor Alan for inspiring us to migrate to Canada and welcoming us into your home making our early days less difficult. Thank you for looking out for us, for helping me find work. With your own challenges as breadwinner, your genuine concern for the well being of other families was one of your many virtues to emulate. And with all that burden you willingly placed on your shoulders, you were exceedingly efficient at work and never missed spending time with God in prayers and in the Sacred Eucharist. You will be fondly missed, but what can we do? God missed you more when you were in exile and He needs more saints in heaven. In the world we live in today, He needs more saints to help. So your work is not done yet, but it will be with the Blessed Apostles, Saint Josemaria Escriva and all the saints, martyrs and angels. And you are not done with us yet, not until we share in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Until we meet again. Let us pray together soon.

Dear Kuya Alan,
I'd like to quote this for you & everyone:
"A bouquet of beautiful memories,
Sprayed with a million tears,
Wishing GOD could have spared you,
If just for a few more years.
It does not take a special day,
For us to think of you.
Each Mass we hear, each prayer we say,
Is offered up to you.
We can not bring the old days back,
When we were all together,
The family chain is broken now,
But memories live forever.
It was sudden parting,
Too bitter to forget,
Only those who loved you,
Are the ones who will never forget.
The blow was hard, the shock severe,
To part with one we loved so dear,
Our loss is great, we'll not complain,
But trust in GOD to meet again."
You were an "Angel in the making" on earth, ever so kind, thoughtful, eloquent, masterful chess player. A good/generous provider for my sister & kids, playful with your "Apos". We'll miss you very much.
Rest in peace my Kuya.
Always with love & peace,
Annie & Rudy.

I thank God for Alan
A Once in a lifetime blessing
A friend, brother faithful to the end
There for you to trust, depend and lean on
Whenever burdens and life challenges are too heavy
and friends, true comrades, hard to find
Thank God for Alan
An inspiration you can depend on
A love unwavering to the end
To my sister, Marivic, committed
Life shared unconditionally
Through thick or through thin
Thank God for Alan
A bright light God shared to all
Especially family, children and grand children
Who's love and self-sacrifice boundless flow
Life shared unconditionally
Through health, sickness, difficulties and happy times
Yes thank God for Alan
Will be sadly missed
As our world is now without
A blessing, a love we have had
Now rest in our Lord God's bosom, finally
In God's eternal presence, we all hope and pray to be.
Amidst often a crazy world,
Mired with inhuman sufferings, corruption, indifference and cruelty
Thank God, for all his blessings of miracles and goodness
Yes thank God, for his infinite love and forgiveness
Yes thank God, for his redeeming love and constant divine providence
And Yes, thank God for Alan, a rare once in lifetime friend-blessing.

Dear Friends and Family of Alan
I have known Alan for almost 25 years during which time I had the opportunity of working with him in Ernst & Young and LGS (later became IBM). He was the epitome of being the perfect gentleman and a professional. However, we were more friends than anything else during the course of our long journey in life. I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Jamie's message. Alan and I have been in touch very often for the last few years and I always joked with him about many things and we always had a hearty laugh. I will never forget him till my dying day.
I already miss you my friend and I bid you adieu with tears in my eyes for your new beginning! May God always bless your soul and protect your family as you have always protected them.
With fondest love and respect, Soumen
